There are four films opening this weekend have have some indirect relationship to hip hop. So we here at fhh decided to report on them (slow news day. lol).
First off is the thriller Obsessed, starring Idris Elba, Beyonce Knowles, and Ali Larter. It’s about a successful asset manager (Elba), who has just received a huge promotion, is blissfully happy in his career and in his marriage to Sharon (Knowles). But a temp worker (Larter) starts stalking him, all the things he’s worked so hard for are placed in jeopardy.
How is this related to hip hop? Well, Idris is a hip hop DJ and artist in his own right. He was working in nightclubs under the DJ nickname Big Driis by the age of 19, but began auditioning for television and film in his early twenties.
Next, Terrance Howard is starring in Fighting along with Channing Tatum. The film’s about a young counterfeiter (Tatum) is introduced to the world of underground street fighting by a seasoned scam artist (Howard), who becomes his manager on the bare-knuckling brawling circuit.
Hip Hop relation? Well who can forget Terrance Howard’s Oscar nominated performance in Hustle & Flow? And Tatum was the star of Step Up 1 & 2! I know, I’m starting to stretch it, but hey!
The third filming opening this weekend is the drama The Soloist. The film stars Robert Downey, Jr. and Jamie Foxx and is about a Los Angeles Journalist (Downey), befriends a homeless Julliard trained musician (Foxx), while looking for a new article for the paper.
I know you’re saying there is no hip hop relation here. But I’ll find one! Jamie Foxx has two hit songs out that feature hip hop artists and are being played on hip hop radio stations across the country. Yup, that’s right.
Lastly, the documentary Tyson about, you guessed it — Mike Tyson is opening this weekend. What’s the hp hop relation here? None really, but why leave it out? Haha.
So as you can see there are plenty of films to choose from this weekend, but they will also be competing with some terrific weather in most parts of the country so we’ll see how the box office tallies end up by Sunday evening.
