Andre 3000 and The Shield

According to an interview on Blackfilm.com, there are big changes in store for rapper’s recurring character when FX show returns this summer.

Andre “3000″ Benjamin will reprise his guest role on the FX drama The Shield when the show airs its seventh and final season this summer, reports Blackfilm.com.

“I’m actually playing a guy running for mayor in the show finale,” he told the Web site. “My character was first introduced years ago in a small role.”

In 2004, the rapper made a guest appearance as the owner of a comic book store who tried desperately to keep the area outside of his shop free of hookers and drug dealers.

Benjamin’s appearance this summer will take place in episode 13.  In the meantime, his next film, Semi-Pro, is due in theaters Friday.

Flavor’s New Show

Flavor Flav

It seems like Flavor Flav can’t be stopped. He is starring in a new half-hour comedy series on MyNetworkTV, the network’s first (hmmm… And how long has it taken BET? 25+ years??).

The show is called Under One Roof and Flav plays Calvester Hill, a former convict who moves in with his wealthy, conservative brother, Walter (Kelly Perine). Calvester turns the Hill family’s life upside down, parading his old prison cronies through the house, teaching his nephew to be a gangsta rapper and butting heads with Walter’s snooty wife.

OK, I guess we’ll see if his past run-ins with the law will pay off.  Flav’s other show, Flavor of Love premieres with its 3rd season this Monday at 9:00 pm on VH1.

Mos Def - Prince Among Slaves

Prince Among Slaves

Tonight on PBS, in celebration of Black History month, Mos Def is narrating Prince Among Slaves.

Born a prince, Ibrahima Abdul Rahman was captured by African tribal rivals and sold into slavery at age 26. It was 1788, and the United States’ expanding plantation system had made the market exceedingly lucrative. Even as Abdul Rahman had been raised to lead men—he was commanding some 2,000 of them at the time he was ambushed—he found himself shackled and loaded onto a ship, the Africa, en route from Timbuktu to a “new world.”

See the trailer below, check out the official website and be sure to watch it tonight on PBS at 10 p.m. EST.

Diddy Keeps is Real(ity)

diddy_narrowweb__300x3432.jpg

Well, it looks like everybody’s favorite hip hip media mogul is getting ready to have another realty show, this time on VH1. Diddy will be searching for an assistant in this Apprentice-like reality show. He already has Making the Band 4 currently running on MTV. SOHH reports:

The reality show will track the 20 finalists as they “compete to win the job of a lifetime,” according to the contest’s website. Contestants must be at least 21 years old, have a “whatever it takes attitude” and be on call 24/7.

Though no further information is available as far as the parameters of the position it is fair to assume that it will be a very demanding one. Diddy has made a name for himself as being a tough guy to work for.

Open calls will be held in New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Boston and Miami. The competition is not limited to residents in these cities though. The nationwide competition is also accepting video submissions of candidates telling why they’re the best person for the job.If you think you have what it takes to be on the show go to workforpdiddy.com to find out more info.

The Boondocks Episodes You May Never See

the-boondocks-huey.jpg

the-boondocks-huey.jpgHipHopDx.com has an exclusive story about two new The Boondocks episodes that may never air on Adult Swim and may not even make it to the second season DVD release.  They are reporting that an anonymous source close to the situation issued a statement exclusively to HipHopDX.com explaining that not one, but two episodes have been banned from airing. Here’s his statement as to what has transpired in recent weeks.

“It now appears official that TWO episodes of The Boondocks second season — clips of which surfaced on and then were pulled from Youtube — will not air. At all. Ever.

Fans who were waiting for the show to reach the levels of controversy that last year’s Peabody Award-winning “The Return of Martin Luther King” episode achieved will have to cross their fingers and hope that Sony execs don’t also pull the episodes from the second season DVD, which is slated for late spring.

The two episodes were originally scheduled to air on November 16 and December 17, respectively. No official reasons were given for the banning of the episodes from either Sony or Adult Swim as of yet. (more…)

Latifah Racking up Awards

Queen Latifah. Photo courtesy of Verve Music Group.

Queen Latifah won another award for her performance in HBO’s Life Support which aired on the network last March.  This time it was a Screen Actor’s Guild Award for Best Actress in a Television Movie or Miniseries.  She also won a Golden Globe earlier this month for the same role.

She was not in attendance to receive her award but presenter Mickey Rooney graciously accepted the award for “Miss Latifah.”

Congratulations goes out to the Queen once again.

Method Acting - The Wire

Method Man. Photo courtesy of HBO.

**Article may contain spoilers

In the (sadly) last season of cable TV’s best show, The Wire, Method Man has seen his role as Cheese increase in screen time.  As the nephew of the now deceased Prop Joe, Cheese has doing a little more on screen dirt than in the previous four seasons.

Method Man’s character has been very verbal at the Co-op; he has consisidered going after The Wire’s most dangerous character, Omar; and he has even possibly taken out one of Baltimore’s crime bosses Hungry Man; he ratted on his own flesh and blood, Proposition Joe; and he also gave up Butchie to Chris.

It may just be me but I have a feeling that Cheese won’t make it through the season finale breathing. Either he will be taken out or he will take out a menacing character like Omar or Marlo.

Stay tuned for the exciting final six episodes on HBO at 9 p.m.

Hip Hop TV This Week: 1/27 - 2/2

Ok, I’m trying to venture into a new realm with this post. I will attempt to post a weekly run down of hip hop based TV shows for the upcoming week. Let’s see if we can handle this. I’m sure that I won’t cover everything. But your input will be much appreciated.

Sunday

  • The Wire - HBO; 9 p.m. (EST)

Monday

  • Making the Band 4 - MTV; 10 p.m. (EST)
  • Boondocks - Cartoon Network; 11:30 p.m. (EST)

Ok, I literally can’t find more. I’ll have to dig deeper. I’m sure that somebody is rockin’ on one of the late night talk shows, and somebody’s making a guest appearance on something (likely a reality shows because of the strike). I’ll add to this list, if you have any suggestions, leave a comment.

Diddy’s Making the Band Again

P Diddy

P Diddy’s MTV show Making the Band 4 is coming back for another season on January 28 at 10 pm. This season the show will feature last season’s ‘man band’ and solo artist Donnie with Season 2’s Danity Kane girl group. They will be sharing the same house in Miami, which I’m sure will lead to shenanigans never seen before on MTV (joking of course).

Look, Diddy is a smart businessman and I’m sure this will help boost sells of both groups, but we’ll see if people are really still interested in following these groups around as they make their respective albums. I’ll catch a few episodes when they run the inevitable Saturday MTB4 marathon.

Check out a preview of the upcoming season after the jump.
