De La Soul to be Honored

De La Soul

Yo, everybody’s favorite rap group (well, at least mine), De La Soul, is being honored at this year’s VH1 Hip Hop Honors. They will be recognized along with Too Short, Cypress Hill, Naughty by Nature, and hip hop’s greatest storyteller, Slick Rick.

“VH1 Hip Hop Honors has come to represent the pinnacle of innovation and achievement in hip hop music,” Tom Calderone, Executive Vice President and General Manager of VH1 said in a press release. “This year’s five honorees are no different and are being recognized for their significant contributions to hip hop culture and for helping to elevate hip hop into a truly global phenomenon.

I, for one, am happy about this year’s line up of honorees. Now all I need to see is EPMD get in there!

The show will be premiering on VH1 and VH1 Soul on October 7 at 10 p.m.

N.E.R.D.’s Hard Days Night?

SOHH.com is reporting that while on New York radio station Hot 97 recently, N.E.R.D. front man Pharrell Williams revealed to host Angie Martinez that the band is gearing for the release of their first film, directed by legendary hip-hop video director and filmmaker, Hype Williams. The movie, which is not yet titled, will depict the trio’s musical journey from the recording process to tours.

“[The movie] is going to be like The Beatles’ Hard Day’s Night,” Pharrell revealed. “[It's a] full length film. It’s for our fans.”

This can be a boost to there music if done well. Not a lot of people who are familiar with the Neptunes sound are even aware that they have a group called N.E.R.D. (that makes some dope music too). I have a feeling that this won’t be as huge as similar film like Jay-Z’s Fade to Black, just because of artist recognition. But hopefully it will be interesting enough to garner some interest.

Also be on the lookout for N.E.R.D.’s new disc, Seeing Sounds, which is slated for release on June 10.

Diddy’s a Star!

 Diddy

So Diddy is keeping the hollywood/hip hop legacy going strong.  According to an Allhiphop.com article Sean Combs became the first male rapper (Will Smith received a star in 2007) to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 2, during a ceremony that drew the largest crowd in the event’s history. Fans wearing Sean John “Harlem to Hollywood” t-shirts packed Hollywood Boulevard, while fans with posters screamed “Diddy” and “Bad Boy” as they welcomed Combs.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that May 2, 2008 has also been declared Sean Combs day in Hollywood. “If it wasn’t for the Hip-Hop community I wouldn’t of got this star,” Diddy told AllHipHop.com. “I always love getting recognized for positive things. Sometimes we always get recognized for some things that are negative, [so] to be recognized for something positive is truly a blessing.”
Now if we can just get Run DMC into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

T.I. a Winner at BET Hip Hop Awards, Still Loses

Ti Shirt 460
T.I. was among the top winners at the 2nd Annual BET Hip hop Awards, which will air on Wednesday, October 17 at 8 p.m. EST. The rapper was arrested by Federal ATF agents on weapons charges just hours before the ceremony. He won two awards including CD of the Year for T.I. vs. T.I.P., but due to being behind bars could not accept them. The website Baller Status reports:

T.I. was slated to perform, but instead, Wyclef Jean performed the rapper’s single, “You Know What It Is,” which he is featured on as well, while host and comedian Katt Williams danced around on stage dressed like T.I. in an attempt to impersonate him.

It’s being reported by MediaTakeOut.com that a source close to embattled rapper T.I. says that the gun charges leveraged against the hip-hopper are false; T.I. never tried to purchase guns — it was all his bodyguard.

Well, I won’t comment too much on this since it doesn’t have a lot to do with film, at least not yet. T.I. is co-starring in American Gangster, which is scheduled to premiere in a couple of weeks. So if his arrest effects the film, I’ll save my comments until then.

For now, watch the BET Hip Hop Awards, hosted by Katt Williams this Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST.

VH1 Honored Hip Hop Last Night…

A Tribe Called Quest

Last night VH1 aired last weeks taping of the 2007 Hip Hop Honors.  This year’s honorees included Missy Elliot, Whodini, Snoop Dogg, and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as the New Jack Swing Era and the film Wildstyle.

The show was good as usual and it’s always good to see some of hip hop’s pioneers be honored and get a chance to rock the mic on a big national stage.

But this brings me to my question.  Why in the world is Missy Elliott being honored so early?  I mean don’t get me wrong, Missy has brought a lot to hip hop and is a very talented songwriter, producer and performer.  But come on man, I can think of a number of people that should be in before Missy (EPMD, De La Soul, Queen Latifah to name a few). (more…)
